SIG 8 - Air Transport Research Society (ATRS)

 

 

Launch date of the SIG / History: This Special Interest Group (SIG) was launched during the 7th WCTR in Sydney, Australia in July, 1995 with strong support of the air transport industry executives and academics doing air transport research.  In particular, Senior Executives of British Airways, Lufthansa, United Airlines, Qantas, and Korean Air participated in this SIG’s inaugural event in Sydney.

Objectives:  This SIG’s principal objectives are the following:

  • Promote the exchange of ideas, methodologies, and results of air transport and aerospace research through conferences, symposia, and regional meetings;
  • Organize and coordinate air transport and aerospace sessions at the WCTRS conferences;
  • Promote healthy interaction among academics, government and private sector researchers, industry executives, and policymakers on important policy, strategy, operations, and technology issues affecting air transport and aerospace;
  • Develop air transport and aerospace research capabilities for projects of international scale requiring multidisciplinary cooperation;
  • Promote linkages between the research community and international agencies and institutions dealing with air transport and aerospace policy; and,
  • Facilitate the formation of international research teams for conducting world-scale research programs on critical air transport and aerospace issues.

Major accomplishments to date (2008):

  • The ATRS has organized annual world conferences starting in 1997.  Conference have been held in Vancouver, Dublin, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, Jeju-Island (Korea), Seattle, Toulouse, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, Nagoya (Japan), and Berkeley (California).  Future conferences are to be held in Athens (July 6-9, 2008) and Abu Dhabi (27-30 June, 2009), and Porto, Portugal (8-10 July, 2010).
  • The ATRS formed the Global Airport Performance Benchmarking task force in 2001 and published its annual benchmarking reports since 2002.
