SIG 5 - Transportation Infrastructure Systems

Launch date of the SIG / History: This SIG was launched at the 6th WCTR in Lyon, focusing on Transportation System Maintenance.  The scope was expanded after the 11th WCTR in Berkeley, to include other research topics focused on Transportation Infrastructure Management.

Objectives:  Its principal objectives are to serve as a forum for the exchange of research in the following areas:
1. Transport Infrastructure Maintenance (deterioration modeling,
assessment technologies, decision-making for maintenance and repair)
2. Transport Infrastructure Economics and Finance
3. Transport Infrastructure Planning
4. Sustainable Development for Transport Infrastructure
5. Transport Infrastructure Security and Hazard Mitigation
These objectives will be reviewed and expanded from time to time in light of SIG members' interests.

Major Accomplishments: Professor Issam Sharaf was chair of the SIG from its inception until 2007 when the role was taken on by Samer Madanat (UC Berkeley).
The SIG co-sponsored the 2008 conference on Applications of Advanced Technology in Transportation which was held in Athens, Greece.  The SIG also prepared and published a special issue of the Journal of Infrastructure Systems in 2009, based on selected papers from the 2007 WCTR, which was held in Berkeley, USA.

Membership: Membership is open to any academic or practitioner with an interest in the subject area. Anyone interested in joining is invited to contact Samer Madanat at the address below.
Please do not hesitate to contact me at the address below if you have any suggestions for the effective running of this SIG.
